Truman Show paper
The Truman Show Paper
Hannah Habeck
Period 2
Imagine what your life would be like if it was all a lie and the only one that didn’t know what was going on was you. This was the life of Truman in the Truman Show and there was a real deeper meaning to it that left me wondering what would happen next. The Truman Show depicts several interesting areas of the video production through how the movie ends, symbolic and philosophical meaning, and philosophical statements.
The ending of a movie can make or break your decision about it. As the movie comes to a close Truman’s last words left a very good impression on me. “In case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good night.” I thought this statement was a good choice because he was really mocking Christof using one of the fake things from the world he created. Christof was trying to get him to stay because he feels that’s where Truman belongs, with him. He watched Truman grow and develop as a child while producing a hit T.V show about him. Once Truman realized he was finally going to get out there was no doubt he was going to leave and not stay. That’s why I found his last words very clever and humorous. While his show is now ruined and over many viewers must wonder what will happen to Christof. I feel that he will lose a bunch of money because the show ended and he will be lost in the shadows of the real world for awhile, but he will soon come up with another clever idea that will make him a huge hit again. This time around though his show won’t last as long and will probably be ruined by the many viewers that had watched the Truman Show because they realized how locked up from the outside world Truman was and how his whole life was a lie. Right at the end there was a little part where Sylvia gets up and starts running right when Truman walks out of the show. I think that Truman will set out to find her and they will fall in love. As they showed in the flashbacks they were meant for each other from the start and he has always loved her so now he is getting his chance to experience love in the real world. Over all I thought that the movie had a great ending.
In the Truman Show there are many philosophical statements. “We accept the reality of the world with what we are presented” – Christof. I can agree and disagree with this statement. There are situations that yes we would definitely accept the world as it was presented to us if you did not see any other ways of life that you could envy or want more than the one you have. Truman does not know of any other world or way of life. He thinks that the life he is living is just as real as anything else. But there is a point where you have to get out and not stay in one spot forever which is what Truman is grieving to do. Then there is the world that we live in today where all we see is the high life where you’re famous with loads of money. Almost everyone wishes they could live the life of someone else rather than the life they have right in front of them. Another philosophical statement in this movie was “nothing is fake, it’s merely controlled.” I can also agree and disagree with this statement. In the life of Truman everything with the technical parts of the show is controlled but all the actors are fake and the whole set and everything about Truman’s life is fake. In our world there are people that are controlled and people that are fake. The fake ones are people w ho acts like someone or something that they are not. The ones that are controlled are people who do whatever somebody else says without questions or complaining. So there are things that are fake that are not controlled but there are also things that are controlled but not fake. Lastly another philosophical statement is “there is no more truth out there than three is in the world I created for you. The same lies, the same deceit. But in my world you have nothing to fear” –Christof. I disagree with this because in the world that was created for Truman they choose what happens and if there are lies and all that which makes it not real. He never really experiences it and what it’s like to have the real emotions and lies and frustrations of the real world. Everything in the show was made so that it was great for Truman he had everything he could ask for and had a great life so he thought. The Truman Show also had many other philosophical statements but those were just a few.
The Truman Show has deeper symbolic meaning and philosophical meaning. The character of Truman kind of reflects a True man because he is the only one in the show that is really himself. Everyone in the show is an actor and is playing a roll. They do the same things everyday and are told what to say. He resembles a true man while everyone else is just starring in a hit T.V show about Truman. The character Christof is kind of like Christ of. This has a deeper meaning because he is like a god in a sort that he created the show and runs everything that goes on with it. He controls the weather and the way of life in this world. Christof is like a deity because he runs the whole show. He is like the king and everyone follows the rules that he makes. Water is a symbol used in this movie because of what they made happen when Truman went out to sea with his dad and his dad drowned. Ever since that he has been terrified of water. In the scene where he is walking to the ferry and next to the dock there is the little boat that looks like the boat he was on with his dad that is a symbolic thing that has to do with water. They wanted him afraid of water so that he would never be able to leave because the only way out was by the water so Truman really thought. But really there was no real way out but to hit the wall of the dome like Truman does and find out what is really going on. There is always some deeper meaning behind everything.
Through the ending, the symbolic and philosophical meaning and philosophical statements the Truman Show depicts several interesting areas of the video production. If your life was like Truman’s you too would be longing to get out and experience something real.

Homecoming is a time that can be stressful for both guys and girls. Boys have the disadvantage of having to ask the girls and finding very creative ways of doing just that, and like most people the are quite nervous during this process.
Were you nervous and why?
“Yes, I was nervous because I had to talk to her parents face to face and I didn’t want to come across as a bad guy.” –Josh Chatfield
There are many guys asking girls around this time of year and they are doing this in many different and creative ways.
"I wrote on a sign with glow in the dark paint saying my wishh is homecoming.. will you? Then put glow in the dark stars all over her room with HC on them.” –Josh Chatfield
“I left a pinata with balloons on her porch and the ballons said break the pinata. Once she did there was a note inside that said "You broke my pinata, dont break my heart too. Homecoming wont be fun unless its with you." –Jake Opheim
“I printed off these packer tickets then i said i got these tickets for us but they are the same date as homecoming so i was wondering what you would wanna go to with me? ” –Derek Schiebel
While they stand flustered trying to come up with the best way to ask, there are plenty of other things on their minds too. Such as how they feel about having to ask the girl or why they feel they have more pressure on them.
How do you feel about guys having to ask girls?
"Its fine, atleast we have sadies for the girls to ask for once." -Derek Schiebel
Do you feel guys have more pressure on them than girls and why?
"Yes, because we have to do most of the work. Ask them, pay for most and lots of other stuff." -Jake Opheim
Over all Homecoming is an exciting and enjoyable night you get to spend with all your friends, even if it starts out a bit stressful.
